The Cultural Society was started in 1982 by a group of aspiring young leaders who wanted to unite the ethnic groups on campus. The sponsor then and now is Mrs. Foster, a 34 veteran teacher of Broward Country and 33 year teacher at Plantation High School. In an effort to pass the torch, the sponsorship changed  to Ms.Renee Grant in 2006, but Ms.Grant relocated and Mrs. Foster resumed sponsorship in 2007.

The purpose of the organization is to promote leadership activities and projects that will unite ethnic groups and promote awareness “that we are one world one people”. This organization thrives on that motto and the reality that we must respect cultural differences and appreciate culture similarities if the school, community, and the world are to project a fierce sense of brotherhood and unity.

Activities

The Cultural Society decorates the halls for each culture as stipulated by the Broward County School Board. September is European Month, October is Hispanic month, November is Native American Month, and etc.The organization celebrates Hispanic and African American Heritage by producing  multi-cultural assembly programs which involve all cultures on campus and many of the departments and clubs…. To include, drama, Las Amigos, the PHS Chorus, the PHS ROTC program, the PHS Marching and Concert Bands,  the PHS Dance Teams and the Step Teams.

Competitions:

The Cultural Society produces a Black History Brain Bowl contest in February of each year and the coaches, Mr.James walker, Mrs.Wanda Walker ,Mr.Frank Pinkney and Mrs. Dona McKenzie have had the winning teams for the past 5 years. The dollar prizes and certificates are generated by the Cultural Society, and the certificates are signed by the Principal, Mrs. Bruining and the Sponsor, Mrs. Foster All grade levels are asked to participate.

Special Field Trips/Experiences:

The organization sponsors an annual  trip to the Tampa State Fair where students can observe the many contributions of ethnic groups in the State of Florida. These include exhibits of the first ice cream churn, demonstrations of how home made butter and how beautiful quilts are made and etc.

It also sponsors an annual  trip to Atlanta, Georgia to visit the Martin Luther King Center and to witness the battle of the bands, sponsored by Honda where historically black colleges and universities compete for the title of being “the best”. The PHS step teams are co-sponsor of this trip.

Community based projects:

We issue Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to needy families, and collect gifts for a designed senior retirement center. The organization presents these gifts and beautiful melodies as they sing Christmas carols for the aged. The organization participates in diabetes walks, cancer walks, beach-clean up and school clean-up projects

Scholarships:

Seniors who have demonstrated leadership ability and have performed all requirements and participated in all of the organizations projects are given a scholarship on Senior Awards Night.
